                 POPCORN/PEANUT SALE GOING STRONG

At press time, Scouts from throughout the Council are busy selling Trails End Popcorn and Virginia Diner Peanuts to help fund their Packs, Troops, Crews and Posts.  Initial reports on the peanut products are encouraging. One question that came to us is in regard to the commission structure. Units will get a base 30% commission from the total of all sales, popcorn + peanuts. However, the prizes are for popcorn sales ONLY.  Units deciding not to take the prizes will receive an additional 5% of their popcorn sales commission.  And, just like last year, those who turned in unit budgets, per-boy accounts and scheduled an FOS presentation will receive an additional 5% in their unit account at the Betts Scout Service Center. That's a possible total of 40%. Please remember that ALL paperwork is due in the office by closing time on November 7, with the exception of the individual Scout order forms. You'll need those to distribute the product to the consumers. Cub Scouts with total sales over $600 and Boy Scouts with total sales over $800 will get summer camp 2009 for free. In addition, any Scout selling over $1,000 will receive his choice of a Playstation3, X-box, or Wii entertainment system (or free camp). Those who choose one of the gaming systems will forfeit their free camp.

Popcorn pickup is November 21 at the United Refining Warehouse on Fourth St from 10 AM until 5 PM. Someone from your unit needs to come pick up your popcorn and peanuts during those times.  They will be given an invoice stating the total of your unit's sale and how much the unit needs to turn into the Council. Popcorn payment date is December 19th.  Your unit will keep its share of the popcorn money, depending on your commission, and turn in the balance at that time. Units who are late will be charged an extra 2% per day as we need to pay the popcorn and peanut companies in a timely fashion. We hope you are having a great sale and we think you'll really like some of the developments coming up for future sales.

COUNCIL  NEWS

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Since this issue covers three major holidays....From Kevin, Ernie, Joan, Kristina and Tim, we hope that everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving, a very Merry Christmas, and our best wishes to all for a very safe, healthy and Happy 2009.  Thank you for all you did to make our Council's 95th Anniversary year so special and so successful.

100% COMMISSION???

Yes, you read that right. Starting 2009, for both our spring (Treats For The Troops) sale and our Fall popcorn/peanut sale, we will be offering 100% commission. That means you keep every penny of what your unit sells.

The one Pack and one Troop (including Crews and Posts) with the highest per-boy sale will receive 100% of what they raise in the sale. It's fair for everyone and everyone has an opportunity to capitalize on this awesome incentive.

Nationally, the per-boy sale average for Trails End popcorn is about $170 per boy. In the Chief Cornplanter Council it's about $230 per boy, one of the highest in the country. Let's see just how high we can get it.

The per-boy average will be determined by the number of youth registered, whether they are selling popcorn/peanuts or not. This means it's all in your hands. If you talk this up amongst your Scouting parents and your Scouts and get them excited about it, the sky's the limit.

We know we're just about to wrap-up our 2008 fall sale, but as you continue to plan your year of Scouting with your families, make sure you put in the Treats For The Troops effort and try to reach that 100% commission for your boys.

FAMILY FRIENDS OF SCOUTING

This is the time of year when we start to ask all of our units to invite us in to tell the story of the Council, where we derive income to continue to exist as an independent Council, where we spend the money we raise, and to ask all of our Scouting families to help support the operation of the Council through Family Friends of Scouting. We're not a rich Council and every dollar of support is crucial to our ability to remain in business. Family Friends of Scouting is an integral part of that funding.

Please select a date when we can come visit your unit in January, February or March. Our presentation is very brief. For instance, if you invite us to a banquet, we can deliver our presentation and be done before everyone is cleaned up and the awards start.  The whole presentation usually doesn’t last for more than about 8 minutes, and we don't force anyone to give.

When you know your date for a Family FOS presentation, please contact Ernie or Kevin at the Service Center.

Thank you in advance for your continued support.

PINEWOOD DERBY

Pinewood Derby time is fast approaching. A great idea is for your Pack to purchase the Pinewood kits for your boys and give them to them as Christmas presents. If you would like to purchase your Pinewood kits as gifts for your boys, we have them in stock at the Betts Scout Service Center. Just drop by during normal business hours.

WOODCARVING SESSION

Wes Augenstein has once again announced that he will host a woodcarving session this winter starting Sunday November 2nd from 1:30 - 4:00 PM.  The sessions will continue until Nov. 23 and then resume on Dec. 7th and 14th. If we still have interested carvers we may do another project in January. Classes will be held in Wes's woodshop at 614 High Street, Youngsville, PA. There is no charge for the sessions. We will start with one project and if interest continues, we will probably start a second project later on. This is not a merit badge class but could be used as a requirement with consent from your counselor. This is open to all Boy Scouts and adults. Please contact Wes (563-4247) or Ernie (723-6700) ASAP so we know how many blanks to prepare. (Yes, you can start Nov 9th if you want to). This was a fun project last year, we hope to keep it going. See you there.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

The Holiday's are upon us and the Red Cross is asking local youth volunteer organizations to make Holiday cards for enlisted men and women from our area that are stationed throughout the world. It's important to show them we are thinking of them during the Holiday Season and appreciate all they are doing to keep us safe.

We are asking that everyone work on the cards now through the end of November. Please bring the cards to the Red Cross Chapter at 305 Market Street by the November 28th so that way we can get them sent out to the troops on time. If you are interested, there is card stock at the Red Cross Building on a first come first serve basis.

I also have a local veteran that has agreed to meet with the different groups to tell them her story and to show them a few things she still has, when she was in the first gulf war, and how important it was to get things from home. That it didn't matter who they were from, but that some one from home was thinking about her. If you're interested in having her talk to your groups please let me know.

I want to thank everyone in advance for their support. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Red Cross at 723-6000.

THANK YOU

I would like to thank you all for your prayers and well wishes during my recent recovery from back surgery. It is nice to know that I have friends who care. I loved the card!

Thanks Again, Ernie

Pinewood Derby Chairman Al Webster would like to announce that he is putting together  Pinewood Derby Car Workshops again this year. The workshops would begin at 6:30 PM and end around 8:30 PM.  This is open to any parent/boy teams who needs help with their car. We will have to limit the size each night to about twenty boys/parent teams. You may sign up for a workshop by contacting Al Webster at 723-6285. There will be NO CHARGE for these workshops. You will however need to supply your own Official Pinewood  Derby kit from the scout shop and anything that you may want to include on your car (stickers, drivers, pipes...etc.).

LEADER BASIC TRAINING

Remember when you were a new leader and were fairly lost trying to figure out how to run a weekly Den meeting or Troop activity? Well, this fall you will be recruiting new leaders who will be in the same boat and will need to learn how to be a great leader and provide an awesome Scouting program for our boys. We ask all Packs, Troops and Crews to urge your new leaders, as well as any current untrained leaders, to attend our New Leader Essentials training sessions.

EVERY youth who joins Scouting DESERVES a trained leader. Please make every effort to have 100% of your adult leaders trained. This will also help you earn the Centennial Quality Unit Award.

FALL  CAMPOREE

Our  fall camporee was held Friday October 10th - Sunday October 12th at the Chapman Dam State Park. If you weren't there then you missed a lot of FUN!  Chairman Tom Yucha did a FANASTIC job at arranging this event.

On Saturday, the Cub Scouts joined the Boy Scouts for a fun day. 63 Cub Scouts attended the event. The Scout Troops had many stations for the Cubs to participate in. There was fishing, row boats, Indian dancing, games, an obstacle course and a station for starting fires and making fire starters.

Pork Connacher and the folks from Troop 22 cooked up a huge lunch and no one went home hungry. A service project was completed on Sunday morning for the park. We removed all tacks, nails and pins from off of the picnic pavilions for the rangers. Thank you for your  support. This project was our way of thanking the park for allowing us to be there. The Camporee patches are ordered and will be put into your troop mailbox at the Betts Scout Service Center. A special Congratulations to Lion Cub Mark Passinger from Pack 14. He was the winner of a combination TV/Radio which was offered as a door-prize.

Again, Thank you to all who helped with this event and especially to all the Troops and Packs that attended.

Local Scouts take advantage of a "Photo Op" with  State Senator Arlen Specter. The Scouts attended a "Tribute to Justice Robert Jackson" held recently at the Warren County Courthouse.
